About Hardware Keys

We track licenses with hardware keys or dongles. We refer to these devices as "hardware keys" because they are a physical device that you can carry and plug as opposed to an intangible software key that uses file data or registry data stored on the disk to control the licenses. See the Hardware Key knowledgebase page for more details on this method of licensing.

How Licensing Works

  • When you purchase a license, we program the appropriate program identification number (PID) into the hardware key memory.

  • The PID is an integer value that we assign to a license type. Examples are:
    • TubeCAD = 351
    • CNC Bender = 357
    • VTube-LASER = 356

  • When run, our software searches for the correct hardware key and checks for the appropriate PID value in the key. If it finds the correct PID, then it is allowed to run.

  • If you purchase different software packages, then multiple PID values can be entered into a single hardware key.

  • These PID values work in either TIME-LIMITED or PERMANENT hardware keys. Time-limited keys are for situations where an expiration date is appropriate. Permanent keys are used situations where the license never expires.

  • When you run KeyCheck with a USB hardware key plugged in, you should see at least one of these ID values in the list. Use KeyCheck to find exactly which licenses are activated on the key we gave you.
