These devices are hard drives in a box that are connected to the network and addressed using a UNC path like "\\bendercell\c". They are setup using an internet browser. They're ideal for backup systems.
This is a Cavalry CAND Series CAND3002T0 Network Hard Drive:
We use this type of device to create a backup system for customers. We recommend it as superior in solution to hard drives that are attached directly to USB or firewire on a shared computer. These devices don't need to be attached to any particular computer to be used.
