Schneider Electronics Modicon Momentum Package

The Schneider Electronics design allows manufacturers to control machinery using modules that specialize on a particular function - like motion control, I/O, digital to analog, weight measurement, etc. Each of the modules can be placed around cnc machinery in convenient locations, then connected to a central computer using cable or wireless connection that attaches to communications adaptors that snap onto each module. Several types of adapters are available for different communications protocols. We always use the TCP/IP Ethernet style of Communications Adapter.

I2T IFC220E Servo Base

The I2T (Pronounced "I Square T") servo bases use the same form as the other Modicon products. However, the base unit is unique because it contains a computer that can control 2 axes. The image on the right shows a servo base with a PLC attached. CNC Bender does not use PLCs because it acts as its own PLC using CNC Bender Processlist logic.

This is the form for the I2T servo modules with an Ethernet Communications Adapter on the top. You can see a slight difference on the base from the INPUT module with the RJ-45 receptacle.

Momentum.jpg

In the I2T servo modules, the serial port is an RJ-45 receptacle port shown in this image. INPUT and OUTPUT modules don't include this port.

INPUT Base

An input base allows us to read proximity switches and buttons around the bender. It has the same form as an output base, but has the unique letters ADI on the right side just below where the communications adapter attaches. We can use 16 point or 32 point input bases. Generally the 32 point bases are less expensive per point.

Tsxmomentum outputbase.jpg

This input base has 32 points with an Ethernet Communications Adapter clipped on the top.

See this data sheet (16 pages) for an overview of these modules.

View the Modicon Momentum I/O Base User Guide (662 pages).

They mount to DIN rails in electrical panels.

OUTPUT Base

An output base has the same form as an input base, but has the unique letters ADO on the right side just below where the communications adapter attaches. We can use 16 point or 32 point output bases to send an output signal (on or off) to directional valves, lights, relays, etc. Generally the 32 point output bases are less expensive per point.

ANALOG Base

For applications were we must control the positions of proportional valves to set pressures, we output and hold a specific voltage in the +/-10 volt range using the Modicon Momentum Analog base to output up to 4 separate channels. (We can control four valves with one Analog module.)

Ethernet Modicon Momentum Communications Adapter

The Ethernet Communications Adapter holds the IP address for this base, and receives the Ethernet cable from a switch or a hub. Each bender is its own small Class C network with addresses like 192.168.0.201, 192.168.0.202, etc.

Example Electrical Panel

Most modules are installed in any order convenient in an electrical panel as shown in this example:

This shows a close-up image of INPUT and OUTPUT modules next to each other in the electrical panel. Notice the Ethernet cables enter the top of the Communications Adapters.
