A linear encoder is an encoder that returns positions along an axis that travels with linear motion.

Contents

Yo-Yo Type

A typical style of linear encoder is a linear position transducer - also known as a "yo-yo" encoder. It contains a spool of cable that, when unwound, rotates an encoder to give a linear length of cable pulled.

"With the transducer mounted at a fixed position, the extensible wire rope is attached to a moveable object. As movement occurs, the extension of the wire rope rotates an internal capstan and sensing device to produce an electrical output signal proportional to the wire rope extension and/or velocity. An internal torsion spring maintains tension on the wire rope and serves as the retraction mechanism. The sensing device may be a precision potentiometer, digital encoder or, for velocity measurement, a tachometer." Source: http://www.unimeasure.com/how-work.htm

Yo-Yo Axes

Any linear axis can use this type of encoder. For example, the horizontal head axis, the vertical head axis, and Pressure Die Assist axis can use this style of encoder.

Brands

An inexpensive brand that we have found reliable is the Unimeasure JX-EP series. Download the datasheet for this encoder here.
