How Licensing Works

We track licenses with hardware some call "dongles." The picture at the top of this page shows one of the hardware key styles we send to customers.

We refer to these devices as "hardware keys" because they are based on a physical device that you can carry and plug as opposed to an intangible software key that uses data to control the licenses.

• When you purchase a license, we program the appropriate program identification (PID) number into the hardware key memory. The PID is an integer value that we assign to a license type. Examples are TubeCAD is 351, CNC Bender is 357, VTube-LASER is 356, etc.

• When you install and run the software you purchased, the software searches for the correct hardware key and checks for the appropriate PID value in the key. If it finds the correct PID, then it is allowed to run.

• If you purchased different software licences that need to run on the same computer, then multiple ID values can be entered into a single hardware key.

• These IDs values work in either TIME LIMITED or PERMANENT hardware keys. Permanent keys are sent to customers who have paid in full for their licenses.

• When you run KeyCheck with a USB hardware key plugged in, you should see at least one of these ID values in the list.
