Recommended Computer Specifications

  • We recommend a computer that can handle demanding CAD packages. For example, use a 64-bit Windows 7 or Windows 10 on a Pentium i7 with 16 GB of RAM.
  • Recommended OS: Windows 7 Professional or Windows 10

What to Avoid

  • Consider avoiding any video cards that are less powerful than the NVIDIA models. Some graphics cards are not only slow, but they can behave erratically with graphics objects on the screen. This is because some graphics cards have bugs in their implementation of OpenGL.
  • Avoid any screen resolution that is less than 1920 in the horizontal.
  • Avoid using Windows screen fonts set to any value over 100%. 125% works - but makes the program harder to use because it pushes some menu items off the bottom of the screen - requiring the use of more scroll bars to access all the data.

Disk Space Requirements

  • The program requires 100 MB of disk space (0.1 Gigabyte).
  • A parts folder with 100 parts (for example, in "My Documents/VTube") requires about 14 megabytes of disk space.

Example Computer Systems

FAST: Dell Precision Models

  • Intel(R) Core(TM) i7

  • Installed Memory: 32 GB minimum

  • System Type: 64-bit, Windows 7 Pro or Windows 10 Pro

  • Video card: NVIDIA (strongly recommended to avoid other brands)

  • Hard drive: A solid-state drive (SSD) is critical. A mechanical hard drive will bog this system down - especially if it is running Windows 10.

  • VERY fast

Highly recommended.

FASTER: Dell T3500 Desktop

Dell Precision T3500 Minitower Workstation, Intel XEON 3500, Windows 7 Pro or Windows 10 Pro, 64 bit, 500 GB hard drive, 12 GB memory

This is one of the faster computers we have run with the FARO and VTube-LASER.

It was installed as part of a turnkey system at a customer's - and we were told it was the most powerful computer in the entire factory.

FASTEST: Asus Rampage Desktop

Asus Ramppage, Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3930K CPU @ 3.20GHz, 3201 Mhz, 6 Cores, 12 logical Processors, 32 GB memory, 250 GB Memory drive, 2 TB second drive, ASUS PCE-N53 300 Mbps LAN, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 video card.

This is the fastest computer we have run with the FARO and VTube-LASER.

We use it as a show computer and for testing new implementations of VTube-LASER.

27" Flat Panel Monitor

We recommend 27" flat panel monitors as the MINIMUM size for measuring center monitors. The top monitor on the right is an Asus PG278Q gaming flat panel that is rated high in performance.

The bottom one is a Dell UltraSharp 27 InfinityEdge monitor.

Some customers like to go even larger in order to allow for easy viewing by multiple operators. This B/E Aerospace installation shows a large TV. The benefit of using a TV with an HDMI cable is that the TV has built-in speakers than replace separate amplified speakers. VTL-large flat screen BEAEROSPACE.png
